Employee Rights

All employees in the UK, including domestic employees, have certain statutory rights and may qualify for statutory benefits. Some rights apply as soon as an employee starts work; others require that the employee has worked for a specific period of time or earns over a certain amount per week. For example, in order to receive statutory payments such as Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) or Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP), an employee must be earning an average of at least the Lower Earnings Limit (or LEL). For the current LEL rate, please refer to Current Rates and Thresholds page.

For an up-to-date guide on the National Minimum Wage and statutory rates for maternity, sick and redundancy pay, please refer to the Current Rates and Thresholds page. It is a good idea to check the Rates page regularly as these usually increase each year.

For a more in-depth guide to each of the statutory entitlements, including eligibility, please select from the list below or from the drop down menu in the main navigation bar.

The above list is not exhaustive. There are additional worker rights such as compassionate leave or time off for dependants plus rules on employee rest breaks, for example. If you require more information on statutory rights, please contact us.
